Framework Contract award - Charging infrastructure for battery electric multiple units

Rail Power Systems GmbH (RPS), based in Munich (Germany), has been awarded a framework contract by DB Energie GmbH for the supply of charging substations for battery electric multiple units (BEMU).
The core of the substations are static frequency converters (SFC) of the TIBS® series from F&S Prozessautomation Dohna (Germany). These SFCs provide the contact line voltage AC 15 kV 16,7 Hz on the secondary side. The charging substations are used to feed spatially limited overhead contact line installations, where BEMUs can travel in a spatially limited contact line section in the same way as a normal electric traction unit, while simultaneously charging the traction accumulators on the vehicles. The charging substations are connected to the feeding power supply network via a medium-voltage switchgear. The SCFs ensure symmetrical power load from the public grid. The contact line sections are connected via an air-insulated contact line switchgear of type TracFeed® TAA, which is also used in regular traction substations and so-called decentralised converter stations of DB Energie. The charging substations have a redundant structure, which ensures a high level of power availability. The output ratings of the substations are scalable and depend on local power requirements. They can be configured for 2,5 MVA, 5 MVA or 7,5 MVA. The first charging substation from the framework contract has already been ordered. Three substations, each with 5 MVA output, are planned for the regional network put out to tender by the local transport association for Schleswig-Holstein (NAH.SH). Stadler vehicles of type FLIRT Akku will operate on this network. Further charging substations are planned in Kleve (North Rhine-Westphalia) with 7,5 MVA output and in Minden with 2,5 MVA output.
The charging substation project is the largest to date in the cooperation between RPS and F&S for the application of converters in the railway sector. A further example of the cooperation is a multi-voltage power supply system, as implemented at the Alstom plant in Bautzen for AC 15 kV 16,7 Hz and AC 25 kV 50 Hz, with the option of extending it to include common DC voltages.
