Measurement of the leakage coating of grass tracks
Project details
Client: Stadtwerke Heilbronn GmbH
Heilbronn, Germany
March 2024 – March 2024

In Heilbronn, above-average corrosion was detected on the trackage in the area of a grass track. RPS was commissioned to determine the cause(s) of the corrosion damage that had occurred and to propose remedial measures.
The localised leakage coatings of the tracks were measured using the method according to DIN EN 50122-2:2023, Annex A.4. All measured leakage coatings are well below the limit value of 2.5 S/km per track in accordance with DIN EN 50122-2:2023. The stray current leakage from the track system calculated with the measured leakage coatings and the recorded potential shift is well below the limit value of 2.5 mA/m per track in accordance with DIN EN 50122-2:2023. The stray current escaping from the trackage is therefore not the cause of the increased corrosion. Measurements of electrochemical potentials revealed that the corrosion can be traced back to galvanic element formation between the foot of the rail and the rail clamps.
